  • Health, Safety, and Wellness Manager

    Job Category: Corporate

    Location: Leamington, ON

    Job Overview
    Reporting to the HR Corporate Director, The Health, Safety, and Wellness Manager oversees all activities of the Health & Safety department including leading all Health, Safety, and Wellness programs and initiatives across the organization. They ensure employee safety and protection measures are in place and compliant with applicable legislation. Their primary responsibility is to identify, remedy and reduce operational, physical, and environmental factors that may cause or contribute to accidents or injury.

    Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    Provides expertise and leadership in corporate Health, Safety, and Wellness considerations, including claims
    management related to workplace injury for the entire organization.

    • Ensures the organization is in compliance with regulations, standards, and policies set forth by governing
      bodies
    • Manages the H&S team to success through support, coaching, hands-on training as they provide the
      necessary service levels and promote a positive safety culture
    • Develops annual health and safety plans, policies, programs, and procedures for the company based on
      assessment of hazards, audits, changing legislation, best practices ensuring Ministry of Labour compliance
    • Acts as an advisor/trainer to managers on H&S issues, legislative requirements, best practices and
      assisting them with implementation, providing coaching and support on specific employee issues. Works’
      cross-functionally with the HR team to resolve issues.
    • Develops and manages internal H&S audits of the company, visiting all sites to conduct inspections and
      risk assessments on specific tasks with the goal of reducing/addressing risks and ensuring compliance.
    • Manages third party inspections incl/timely reporting of issues and implementation of corrective actions
    • As Employer Chair overseeing the Joint Health and Safety Committee, ensuring all action items are
      followed up on and committee members are adequately trained
    • Oversees the return to work and modified work programs, working closely with the H&S team, the
      employee, their supervisors, and WSIB to ensure a safe and timely return to work.
    • Working with the H&S team on any complex WSIB claims, disputes, or appeals; liaising and providing
      guidance where appropriate, ensuring yearly rebates are gained.
    • Investigating accidents, incidents, near misses, etc. thoroughly and responding appropriately including
      communicating, training, and following up with supervisors and employees
    • Provides monthly/annual reports on WSIB, non-loss time injuries. lost time injuries, health-related
      absenteeism and other occupational health and safety information
    • Oversees H&S training for new and existing employees, management, and visitors to ensure
      understanding of potential risks and expected behaviors within the company (WHMIS, lock out tag out,
      working at heights, fall protection, safety orientation, safe use of equipment - forklifts, hand tools, proper
      PPE, working alone, electrical work restrictions to licensed employees, approved agricultural chemicals
      etc.)
    • Oversees the matrix for training requirements, including maintenance and retention of all health and
      safety records, renewal dates for certification ensuring employees receive complete training
    • Coordinates health and safety supplies ensuring appropriate supplies are identified and purchased in a
      timely and cost-effective manner and used appropriately
    • Performing other related duties and projects as required

     

    Qualifications

    • Minimum 5 years in a Health and Safety leadership role, greenhouse experience is considered an asset
    • 5 to 10 years or more of experience implementing and promoting safe work practices and policies
      University degree or College diploma in Health and Safety, Human Resource Management, Disability
    • Management, Occupational Health Nursing, or a related field. Solid knowledge of OHSA, WMIS, and health
      and safety legislation, regulations
    • Knowledge of safety law, health & safety best practices, workplace hazards, and control measures
    • First Aid and CPR certification
    • Solid relationship builder with collaborative negotiation skills and the ability to explain safety programs to
      employees and get buy in
    • Able to work on cross-functional teams without direct supervisory responsibility of the teams.
    • Experience creating and facilitating training programs including delivering safety orientations
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities across multiple sites; strong organizational and detail orientation
    • Ability to implement and improve systems and processes; enforce standards and procedures and minimize non-conformance of standards; strong follow-through
    • Excellent documentation and report writing skills; and efficient document maintenance
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Team player, positive attitude, flexible, adaptable.
    • Good Relationship Building and conflict resolution skills.
    • Strong computer skills with knowledge of Windows applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and ability to prepare accurate reports in a timely manner
    • Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle are required.
    • Ability and willingness to travel across US/Canada borders. Valid passport required.

     

    Working Conditions

    • Continuation of learning and development through extra-curricular courses
    • Works with a wide array of people in a team setting, these include HR, management, locals, offshore
      workers, contractors, etc.
    • The greenhouse may be hot, humid, moist, or cold at any time of the year and during cleanout the
      greenhouse will be dusty.
    • Exposure to pests in the greenhouse.
    • Works Monday-Friday, an average of 40-50 hours/week. Must be flexible to work Saturdays or longer
      hours as needed.
    • Travels from phase to phase frequently
    • Spends a fair amount of time both in and out of the office

    Compensation is based on experience

  • AZ Truck Driver Farm

    We are currently seeking an applicant to join our team and fill a full-time position as AZ Truck Driver & Heavy Equipment Operator at our greenhouse operation in Leamington, ON.

    Job Details

    The AZ Truck Driver primarily assists the Energy Department by hauling wood and other plant material from location to location as well as operate heavy equipment and assist in the wood boiler room when required. We are seeking responsible candidates who operate with a keen sense of safety.

    Job Duties

    Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Transport wood and plant materials to/from various locations
    • Load trucks with heavy equipment i.e. payloader, excavator
    • Haul heavy equipment occasionally with flat deck trailer
    • Assist in wood boiler room when required
    • Operate heavy equipment to assist with projects when required
    • Snow removal in winter months
    • Performs other related duties and projects as required.

    Job Requirements

    • Valid AZ License is required
    • Clean Drivers Abstract is required
    • A heavy equipment safety course is an asset
    • Common sense, problem solving skills and teamwork are essential

    • Must be safety conscious at all times and follow all Occupational Health and Safety Act regulations

    Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Lawn care including trimming and edging around walks, flower beds, and walls.

    • Driveway repair
    • Clearing litter

    Job Requirements:

    • Must be able to perform physical labour daily.

  • Forklift Operator

    Job Details

    As part of the Warehouse team, the Forklift Driver is responsible for ensuring products are received, shipped, and handled in a timely, accurate and safe manner, and equipment is maintained.

    Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Loading and unloading of trucks, unpacking received goods.
    • Inspection and verification of all shipments and incoming goods against packing slips
    • Sorting shipments and distributing product once they have been unloaded.
    • Undertake physical inventory counts and stock checks.
    • Material handling
    • Delivery of materials to the appropriate storage area or department.
    • Updating and maintaining all necessary paperwork in an accurate and timely matter.
    • Preparing packing slips and ensuring coordination with driver.

    Job Details
    A Warehouse Supervisor works in a dynamic team environment alongside General Laborers, Forklift Drivers, Quality Control, Machine Operators, and the Human Resources team to ensure production and other processes within the warehouse operation are running smoothly. If production quotas are met while maintaining quality and safety standards, employee performance, and a positive team atmosphere the Warehouse Supervisor has done their job well.

    Job responsibilities include; but are not limited to:
    • Coaching and training employees on proper packing/warehouse procedures
    • Planning, delegating, motivating and leading the team daily to improve performance, while ensuring work is done efficiently, correctly and up to quality standards
    • Collaborating with the Warehouse Manager and Warehouse Supervisors to ensure proper allocation of staff and work
    • Ensuring production lines are organized, prepared, cleaned and maintained to Health and Safety standards and ensuring only quality products are packaged
    • Ensuring all production requirements are met daily
    • Ensuring quality standards are met at all times and compliance of all Health and Safety and Food Safety policies and procedures are maintained
    • Providing feedback, conducting performance reviews and if necessary; applying progressive discipline processes for non-compliances, in a respectful manner
    • Monitoring and reporting maintenance needs to the Maintenance Department or performing minor repairs as needed.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Troubleshoot and complete routine repairs, general maintenance, and preventative maintenance, such as: installation and maintenance of machines and equipment, emergency/unscheduled repairs of equipment as well as scheduled maintenance repairs as directed.
    • Perform regular preventive maintenance on machines, equipment, and facilities as directed.
    • Perform simple machinist duties and responsibilities.
    • Diagnose problems, replace, or repair parts, test and make adjustments.
    • Perform a variety of plumbing maintenance and carpentry functions around the farm as required.
    • Use a variety of hand and power tools, and material handling equipment in performing duties.
    • Detect faulty operations, defective material, and report those and any unusual issues to supervisor.
    • Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas.
    • Report to a facilities or maintenance manager for issues and repair plans.

    Requirements

    • Greenhouse maintenance experience an asset.
    • Millwright, tool & die and/or general farm maintenance experience are assets.
    • Welding experience an asset.
    • Experience using hand and electrical tools.
    • Able to work independently but also a good team player.
    • Able to read and understand work orders and other types of reports.
    • Able to read manuals and drawings an asset.
    • Basic math abilities required.
    • Able to analyze and reason problems and issues, attention to detail.
    • May be required to do some heavy lifting. It would be beneficial to be physically fit.

    Job Details
    Bio Scouts are essential members of our greenhouse operations as they are responsible for the monitoring and care of crops through biological control of diseases or pests. They provide valuable information to the growers and managers to ensure the proper care and wellbeing of the crops and allow us to grow at the scale we do at Nature Fresh Farms.

    Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Inspection and monitoring of assigned sections of crops/plants for pests, biologicals, diseases or damage
    • Distinguishing between different species of pests or disease to ensure proper documentation of findings and reporting to the Growers/Management in a timely manner
    • Applying biologicals when necessary and implementing any plans that come up as a result of findings
    • Removal and disposal of damaged plants in the appropriate manner
    • Compliance with all Food Safety, Health & Safety and operational policies and procedures
    • Assisting with the annual crop cleanout

    Job Requirements:

    • Minimum of 1-year Bio Scout experience is required
    • Attention to detail is necessary
    • Ability to complete duties with minimal supervision and comfort working independently
    • Good communication skills both written and verbal are needed to work effectively with all levels of employees and management
    • Ability to work at heights and utilize a scissor cart

    Working Conditions

    • Climates within the greenhouses can vary from cold to very warm and can be humid at times
    • Must be able to stand/walk for extended periods of time; some bending, crouching, kneeling and working at heights may be required
    • Will have exposure to various pesticides and insects including bees
    • Must be available Monday-Friday and on occasion Saturday`s
    • Hours will fluctuate to reflect the ongoing needs of the business – average 40-55 hours be week
