The ultimate product for the Tomato enthusiast, we’re thrilled to announce that the YOOM® Tomato has officially been added to our Tomato lineup!
Let’s take a closer look at how the YOOM® Tomato’s color, flavor profile, and nutritional value make it a one-of-a-kind product you and your family will love to eat.
How We Grow YOOM® Tomatoes
Just like every other Tomato, Pepper, Cucumber, and Strawberry we grow at Nature Fresh Farms, the YOOM® Tomato is grown with certified non-GMO seeds using our trusted greenhouse growing practices. In fact, many of the same growing techniques and technology we use to grow our other Tomatoes are also used for growing the YOOM® Tomato!
From using a coconut husk growing medium, to watering with a closed-loop irrigation system, to being pollinated by Bumble Bees, the YOOM® Tomato has very similar growing needs to our other Tomato varieties. We even harvest them on-the-vine like many other types of Tomatoes.
One big difference the YOOM® Tomato boasts is how its color changes during the ripening process. While many Tomatoes start out green and ripen to a vibrant red color, the YOOM® Tomato also starts out green, but ripens from jet black to a deep purple color. You can also clearly see a dark red “star” under the Tomato’s calyx when it has fully ripened.
It may look different on the outside, but when it comes to how it’s grown, the YOOM® Tomato is almost identical to our other Tomato varieties—making it the perfect new addition to our lineup!
What Makes the YOOM® Tomato So Special
There are three main characteristics of the YOOM® Tomato that make it so special: its unique coloring, one-of-a-kind flavor profile, and exceptional nutritional value. Let’s dig a little deeper into these features of the YOOM® Tomato!
The Link Between Color & Nutrition
When compared to a classic red Tomato, the YOOM® Tomato’s deep purple coloring is its most striking difference. While a seed’s origins can affect the color of many fruits and vegetables (think colorful Native corn varieties or our range of Heritage Tomato varieties), a Tomato’s color is largely dictated by it having a high concentration of certain vitamins and nutrients.
In the case of the YOOM® Tomato, which is grown from non-GMO seeds, the deep purple pigmentation is the result of a high concentration of anthocyanin compounds found in the Tomato. Anthocyanins are found in all fruits and vegetables that are traditionally red, purple, or blue in color (including blueberries, pomegranates, and red cabbage). Anthocyanin-rich foods support a healthy diet and have many great health benefits, including helping to lower blood pressure, prevent neurological diseases, and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Along with anthocyanins, the YOOM® Tomato is also rich in carotenoids (beneficial antioxidants like lycopene) that also support a healthy lifestyle. These carotenoids are what cause the YOOM® Tomato’s internal blush coloring.
When talking about a healthy diet, they don’t say “eat the rainbow” for nothing! Colorful fruits and vegetables are some of the healthiest foods you can add to your diet.
Flavor
Along with being incredibly healthy, the YOOM® Tomato has a unique flavor we’re sure you’ve never tasted in a Tomato before. This two-bite Tomato boasts an intensity and range of flavor from savory to tart with a hint of plum-like sweetness. Raw or cooked, the YOOM® Tomato’s incomparable taste elevates any snack or meal.
