A new Tomato has taken the produce department by storm: Nature Fresh Farms Hiiros™.
When the Nature Fresh Farms team was first introduced to this new Tomato variety, we knew it was something special. Our team learned that this Tomato was originally bred for the Japanese market, which views exceptional produce as a gift of honor. We interpreted their praise for its remarkable flavor as a world-class endorsement—so we couldn’t pass up on an opportunity to grow it ourselves.
While originally bred for Japanese palates, we knew this Tomato had incredible potential within the North American market. In 2020, our team started trialing this new variety in our Discovery Center. After 2 years of extensive research, trials, and brand development, Nature Fresh Farms officially introduced Hiiros™ Tomatoes to North American customers in the fall of 2022!!
Since launching, our Hiiros™ Tomatoes have made quite the impression on everyone who has tasted them. Keep reading to learn more about why this product is the talk of the Tomato category!
Growing Hiiros™
Hiiros™ Tomatoes are grown in our greenhouses from the finest non-GMO seeds. We use the same growing techniques as all our other Tomato varieties to ensure our Hiiros™ are grown under the best conditions . Every environmental factor – whether it’s temperature, humidity, or watering – can be adjusted in the greenhouse to ensure our Hiiros™ Tomatoes are grown to their full potential!
Hiiros™ are also vine-ripened, which is essential in achieving their remarkably rich flavor and maximum freshness. Once they reach peak ripeness, our team harvests these Tomatoes either loosely or while still on the vine.
However you choose to enjoy your Hiiros™, you’ll taste a delicious Tomato that was grown with incredible care!
What Makes Our Hiiros™ Exceptional
Enjoying Hiiros™ Tomatoes is an exemplary palate experience. But what do we mean by that? Here’s what makes these special Tomatoes truly exceptional.
Incomparable Flavor
Hiiros™ Tomatoes offer a rich umami flavor with a distinguishing level of sweetness that adds depth and complexity of flavor that you won’t experience from any other Tomato.
What exactly is umami? One of the five basic tastes – alongside salty, sweet, sour, and bitter – umami is best described as a savory or meaty flavor. Hiiros™ Tomatoes are unique in that their umami flavor is perfectly balanced with a sweetness typically tasted in a Cherry or Grape Tomato.
Eating with your Eyes
When we first saw this Tomato variety, we knew its deep red color was an important part of its story. That’s why we named the product Hiiros: the Japanese translate of Scarlet Red. The name is a perfect homage to this Tomato’s origin story as well as an authentic way to describe its rich red coloring.
Another eye-catching element of our Hiiros™ Tomatoes is its deep green vine and calyx (the star-looking leaf found on top). The elegant contrast between the vines and the Tomatoes themselves made offering Hiiros™ Tomatoes both on the vine and loose with the calyx a must.
